The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, has come forward to discuss how alleged attempts by the incumbent, Okezie Ikpeazu, to rig the polls in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were resisted by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who were deployed to the scene.
Remember that on Monday, March 20, 2023, a VANGUARD report
revealed that Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner for Voter Education, has declared a suspension of the results collation for the final local government area (Obingwa) in Abia State. Okoye claims that after thugs broke into the INEC office there and held its employees, hostage, for several hours, it was decided to thoroughly investigate the data presented for the Obingwa LGA.
In an interview with ITV that aired a few hours ago in Benin, the capital of Edo State, Abure acknowledged that the ruling party in the state had pressured some INEC officials to tamper with the results after it became clear that Alex Otti of the Labour Party was leading by a sizable margin after results from all the other LGAs had been compiled.
It is regrettable that the culture of impunity we saw during the presidential election has spread to the elections for governor and state legislature, the man remarked.
After learning about the manipulation in Abia, where we had won all but one of the local governments, I felt compelled to speak out yesterday.
after the manipulation that was going to occur in Abia, where we have won nearly all of the local governments and only one is still to be decided.
Ikpeazu waited for all the local government results to be compiled before going to his own local government, holding INEC personnel hostage, and attempting to tamper with the results.
In reality, he made an effort to get 30,000 more votes.
There are 15,000 registered voters in the Obingwa local government area as of the time I am speaking with you.
Yet he made an effort to bring in $30,000 in an effort to skew the results.
Sadly for him, the INEC representatives present fought him and refused to work with him.
He consequently had an issue with that specific municipal government.
