ABUJA — Presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, on Wednesday dismissed zoning as the key criterion for selecting Nigeria’s next president, insisting that competence and unifying leadership should shape the 2027 election.

Hayatu-Deen made the remarks at the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja after submitting his nomination forms for the party’s presidential primary ahead of the January 2027 general election.

Speaking on the party’s primary process, he said the Electoral Act clearly provides for how primaries should be conducted, adding that the ADC leadership would determine the most suitable approach to secure victory in the election.

On zoning, the presidential hopeful argued that Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges require capable leadership rather than ethnic or regional considerations.

According to him, Nigeria’s over 230 million citizens deserve a leader who can unite the country, understand its problems and opportunities, and position it effectively in the global community.

Hayatu-Deen lamented the country’s worsening economic conditions, citing rising inflation, hunger, poverty, insecurity, poor healthcare and the growing number of out-of-school children.

He pledged that, if elected, his administration would prioritise poverty reduction, improved security, lower living costs and reforms aimed at returning children to school.

The ADC aspirant also stressed that anyone seeking the presidency must see themselves as a leader for all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or regional background.

He said the office of president demands national responsibility and commitment to serving every citizen equally.

Expressing confidence in his ambition, Hayatu-Deen declared that he was fully prepared for the race and optimistic about emerging victorious in the election.
