Nigeria is a country of over 200 million people and is home to a complex and diverse society. The country is known for its cultural richness, vast natural resources, and large population of young people who are eager to participate in the development of the country. However, Nigeria is also known for its electoral challenges, which have resulted in disappointment and disillusionment for many Nigerians.

INEC has been criticized

In Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for organizing and conducting elections. INEC is meant to ensure that elections are free, fair, and transparent and that the results accurately reflect the will of the people. However, in recent years, INEC has been criticized for failing to live up to its responsibilities, particularly during the 2019 elections.

The 2023 elections were a major disappointment for many Nigerians, as INEC was accused of failing to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. The presidential election was particularly controversial, with accusations of vote rigging, voter intimidation, and the disenfranchisement of millions of voters, still, Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the presidential election. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced the results in the wee hours of Wednesday, which were marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities.

The failures of INEC during the 2023 elections had far-reaching consequences for Nigeria. Firstly, it led to a loss of faith in the electoral process and the government. Many Nigerians had hoped that the 2023 elections would mark a turning point for the country, but instead, they were left feeling disillusioned and betrayed. The failure of INEC to conduct free and fair elections eroded trust in the democratic process and made it difficult for Nigerians to believe that their votes could truly make a difference.

Secondly, the failures of INEC during the 2023 elections led to violence and unrest in some parts of the country. In the aftermath of the elections, there were reports of clashes between supporters of different political parties, as well as incidents of voter intimidation and ballot-box snatching. The violence was particularly pronounced in the northern states and some of the southern states as well, where there were allegations of voter suppression and intimidation by security forces.

The international community also took note of the failures of INEC during the 2023 elections. The European Union (EU) sent a team of observers to monitor the elections, and their report was scathing. The EU observers noted that the elections were marred by significant shortcomings, including the lack of transparency in the electoral process, the low level of voting materials in some places, and the widespread irregularities that affected the credibility of the results.

The EU observers also noted that the failures of INEC during the 2023 elections were particularly concerning given the importance of Nigeria as a regional leader and an emerging economic power. Nigeria is home to a significant portion of the African population, and any instability or unrest in the country could have serious consequences for the region as a whole. The EU observers emphasized that it was important for INEC to take immediate steps to address the shortcomings identified in the report, in order to restore faith in the electoral process and the government.

Despite the criticisms leveled at INEC by both domestic and international observers, the commission has yet to take significant steps to address the failures of the 2023 elections. There have been some minor reforms, such as the fixing of new electoral technology, but these have been insufficient to restore faith in the electoral process. Furthermore, the commission has been accused of being slow to act on allegations of electoral misconduct, leading to a lack of accountability for those responsible.

The consequences of INEC’s failures during the 2023 elections have been significant and far-reaching. The loss of faith in the democratic process has made it difficult for Nigeria to attract foreign investment and build a stable and prosperous economy.
