Early Life and Education

Peter Obi was born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, to the family of Chief Philip Obi, a businessman, and Grace Ifeyinwa Obi, a teacher. He attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, for his secondary education and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos.

Business Career

Peter Obi is a successful businessman with interests in various industries, including the banking and hospitality sectors. He is the founder of Next International Nigeria Ltd., a conglomerate involved in manufacturing, real estate, and other business ventures. He has also served as a non-executive director of several Nigerian companies, including Fidelity Bank Plc, Guardian Express Bank Plc, and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company.

Political Career

Peter Obi’s political career began in 1998 when he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He later served as the chairman of the board of the National Economic Council of Nigeria from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he contested for and won the gubernatorial election in Anambra State, defeating the incumbent governor, Chris Ngige, in a highly contested election. Obi’s victory was historic, as it marked the first time an incumbent governor in Nigeria was defeated in an election.

As governor, Peter Obi embarked on a series of reforms aimed at improving the economic and social development of Anambra State. He invested heavily in education, health, infrastructure, and security, among other sectors. He also tackled corruption and wastage in government spending, leading to significant savings that were channeled into development projects.

During his tenure, Peter Obi implemented policies that transformed Anambra State into one of the fastest-growing economies in Nigeria. He attracted foreign investors and improved the state’s revenue base, which increased from N6.7 billion in 2006 to N26 billion in 2013. He also built several road networks, bridges, and other critical infrastructure that linked remote communities to urban areas, making transportation easier and more accessible.

He was also recognized as the Most Prudent Governor in Nigeria by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance and Appropriation in 2013.

In 2014, Peter Obi handed over power to his successor, Willie Obiano, after completing his second term as governor. Since leaving office, he has remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics, using his platform to advocate for good governance, social justice, and economic development. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was the party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections.
