Mikel Arteta has urged his side to deliver a dominant performance against already-relegated Burnley on Monday as they edge closer to a first Premier League title in 22 years.
Arsenal currently sit two points clear of second-placed Manchester City with two matches remaining, following a controversial VAR decision that disallowed a late West Ham equaliser last weekend.
However, City remain ahead on goal difference and could still overtake Arsenal if the Gunners drop points against Burnley or in their final-day trip to Crystal Palace.
Pep Guardiola’s side also face a tricky run-in, with away fixtures against Bournemouth—who are pushing for Champions League qualification—before a home clash with Aston Villa.
Arteta, speaking on Thursday, stressed the importance of both results and goal difference, saying his team must take their chances in front of goal.
“First of all, we have to earn the right to win the game. To make a difference with more goals, even better,” he said.
He added that while Arsenal’s recent win over West Ham was hard-fought, increasing their scoring output could prove decisive in the title race.
In team news, defender Ben White has suffered a knee injury that is expected to rule him out for the rest of the season, potentially ending his chances of featuring for England at the World Cup.
Right-back Jurrien Timber also remains sidelined, although Arteta has not ruled out a return before the Champions League final on May 30.
“He’s such an important player for us… there is a chance he could play again this season,” Arteta said, while noting that Timber is doing everything possible to recover in time.
