The first son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Adamu Abubakar has resigned from his position as commissioner for works and energy development in Adamawa state following the Governor Fintiri’s resignation from PDP to the APC.

Abubakar made his resignation known in a letter dated Monday, March 2, 2026, addressed to the governor through the secretary to the state government (SSG).

He, however, did not state in the letter reasons for his resignation from the cabinet.

His resignation follows Governor Fintiri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress.

In a statement on Monday night by the Personal Assistant and Media Aide to the former commissioner, Abdulaziz Jauro, he said his principal thanked the governor “ for the rare privilege and confidence bestowed upon him to serve in such a strategic capacity”.

He said the former commissioner described the opportunity as an “honour of immense significance” and pledged his continued loyalty and support to the administration’s developmental vision.

“Adamu Atiku also extended heartfelt appreciation to his father for granting him the moral support and blessing to serve the people of Adamawa State,” the statement reads.

“He also commended the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Energy, the directors, engineers, and the entire staff of the ministry for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication to infrastructural advancement across the state.”

According to the statement, the former commissioner also conveyed special appreciation to the people of Jada, his immediate community, for their steadfast prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support throughout his tenure.

Abubakar emphasised that his resignation does not mark the end of his commitment to public service, but rather the beginning of new avenues for developmental collaboration.

In the statement, Abubakar also reaffirmed his readiness to continue contributing meaningfully to the growth, unity, and progress of the state.

Last Friday, the state governor, Rt. Hon. Umaru Fintiri announced his formal defection to the APC in a statewide broadcast, saying all members of his cabinet and the PDP in the state had moved with him to the ruling party.

In less than 24 hours afterwards, 22 Commissioners and Special Advisers in the state announced their defection to the ruling, All Progressive Congress, APC after dumping the Peaople’s Democratic Party, the PDP.
